EARLY MUSIC MORELLA COMES TO A DRAMATIC CLOSE

The walled city of Morella (Spain) opened its gates to the Third International Mediaeval and Renaissance Music Seminar. More than a hundred students took part from such far-flung places as Japan, Chile, Mexico, the USA, and of course Spain and the rest of Europe, coming together with 16 outstanding tutors to share in musical tradition.

The participants were able to enjoy a wide range of performances, seminars and workshops, allowing them to get to grips with the music from different, but complimentary, viewpoints. Besides all this, the surroundings, the magnificent setting of the walled city with its long history, made for an unforgettable experience.

Carles Magraner and his team once again put their common sense and good taste to work, which combined with their limitless passion for the arts, imaginative use of resources and vocational spirit, will assure them not just a place in our hearts, but also in the books that will one day tell the story of our music.

Mara Aranda‘s Sephardic Music Seminar culminated in a performance alongside the usual great musicians: Eduard Navarro (gralla, tarota, dolçaina, moraharp), Abel Garcia (lute and hurdy-gurdy), Robert Cases (theorbo and renaissance guitar) and Pere Olivé (mediaeval and traditional percussion). The group was lucky enough to have Glenn Velez on board too who, through his great works like ‘Tocs de Morella’, gave the best of his performing abilty and big personality to the traditional music scene in Valencia.

A great many thanks go to all those, tutors and participants, who shared this time together with us! Thanks also to the city of Morella for having us! (Photo: Mara Aranda and Glenn Velez)
